Checking your oil level
It's important to keep track of your oil level. Always consult your Owner's Manual for the proper procedure to check your oil level. You'll get a more accurate dipstick reading by following those instructions.
Do I Need to Check My Oil if I Have a Newer Car?

Yes! Although new cars have sophisticated computers that often indicated when your oil is low or it’s time for an oil change, they’re not perfect. If you’re planning a long trip or don’t recall the last time you had an oil change, check it. And, if the sticker says it’s time for an oil change but you know it’s been far less than the recommended number of miles, take a look at the level and the color. If you notice that it’s low and looks dirty, head to your oil change center.

The Value of Proactive Maintenance

Identifying minor issues during a routine oil change inspection can save you significant time, money, and stress down the road.3 A small leak caught early, worn brake pads noticed before they damage rotors, or a dying battery detected before it leaves you stranded – these are the benefits of our comprehensive approach.

At Calibey's Oakhurst Auto, we believe in transparency. Any findings from our inspection will be clearly communicated to you, along with recommendations, before any additional work is performed. Our goal is to empower you with information, allowing you to make informed decisions about your vehicle's care.

Don't settle for "just an oil change." Choose Calibey's Oakhurst Auto for a service that protects your engine and provides a vital check-up for your entire vehicle. Drive with confidence, knowing your car has received thorough and professional attention.

Why Is My Reminder Sticker Set to 3,000 Miles?

Unfortunately, that’s the default for the majority of the oil change centers out there. There was a time when almost every vehicle’s manual did recommend an oil change at 3,000 miles. However, unless you have an older car, your vehicle likely has another recommendation. In general today’s common recommendations range from 5,000 miles depending on the type of oil used, driving conditions and they type of engine. If you have a new car, chances are good that there’s an oil use light that will tell you when it’s time for an oil change.

Which Viscosity Oil Do I Need?

Most oil change centers will default to the manufacturer’s guidelines for this as well. However, if you are a full time Florida resident, you don’t need to worry about changing the viscosity during the winter or summer as it doesn’t get cold enough frequently enough to make a difference here. Make sure to let your mechanic know if you’re heading back north so they can take that information into consideration when they choose a viscosity.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I Need Synthetic Oil?

Again, we default to the vehicle manufacturer to answer this question. Some manufacturers recommend it for performance. However, in the vast majority of vehicles it comes down to personal preference and driving styles. Synthetic oil will last longer and is often a better choice for owners who tend to drive far distances frequently. If you do mostly local driving and frequently have short trips, conventional oil may be a better choice.

  • Fluid Checks and Top-Offs: Beyond just engine oil, we inspect and top off other vital fluids such as coolant, power steering fluid, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid.1 Proper fluid levels are crucial for the efficient operation of various systems.

  • Tire Health Assessment: We check tire pressure, inspect for abnormal wear patterns, and assess tread depth. Correct tire pressure is essential for fuel efficiency and safety, while even wear can indicate alignment issues.2

  • Brake System Review: Our technicians will visually inspect your brake pads for wear and rotors for condition. Healthy brakes are paramount for your safety on the road.

  • Under-Hood Examination: We'll check belts and hoses for cracks, leaks, or wear. These components are vital for your engine's cooling and accessory systems. We also inspect the air filter and cabin air filter for cleanliness, which impacts engine performance and interior air quality.

  • Lighting and Wiper Functionality: We ensure all exterior lights (headlights, tail lights, brake lights, turn signals) are working correctly and that your windshield wipers are effectively clearing your view.

  • Steering and Suspension Components: While not always a full diagnostic, we perform a visual check for any obvious issues with steering linkages or suspension components that could affect handling and safety.

  • Battery Performance Check: We'll test your battery's health to help prevent unexpected breakdowns, especially crucial in Florida's climate.
